Saint James responded without hesitation when Jesus called him. His example reminds us that God still invites ordinary people to extraordinary lives of faithful discipleship.
Welcome to today’s devotion on Answering God’s Call (Feast of Saint James the Apostle). Every year on July 25, the Church celebrates Saint James the Apostle, one of Jesus’ first disciples. His life demonstrates what happens when someone responds wholeheartedly to God’s invitation.
While not everyone is called to leave fishing boats or travel as an apostle, every believer is called to follow Christ with obedience, courage, and love. Today’s devotion encourages you to reflect on how God may be calling you today and to trust Him enough to take your next faithful step.
A young professional dreamed of making a difference through ministry but kept delaying every opportunity to serve. He believed he needed more experience, more confidence, and better timing before saying yes to God. Months turned into years as fear quietly replaced faith.
One Sunday, he heard a sermon about the disciples leaving everything to follow Jesus immediately. The message challenged him deeply. He realized that waiting for perfect conditions had become an excuse for avoiding obedience.
He volunteered to mentor teenagers at his church. Though nervous at first, he discovered that God equipped him as he faithfully served. Looking back, he realized that God’s greatest blessings began the moment he answered His call.
Many believers experience similar moments. God’s invitation often comes before we feel completely prepared. Like Saint James, we are invited to trust the One who calls us rather than our own abilities.
The Feast of Saint James the Apostle reminds us that discipleship begins with a willing heart. James and his brother John were ordinary fishermen when Jesus called them to follow Him. Scripture tells us they responded immediately, leaving behind their nets, their livelihood, and even their family business to become followers of Christ.
James did not know everything that lay ahead. He could not foresee the miracles he would witness, the challenges he would face, or the sacrifice his faith would eventually require. Yet he trusted Jesus enough to obey.
God still calls people today. His call may involve serving in the church, encouraging someone who is struggling, sharing the gospel, forgiving an offender, raising a godly family, or simply living faithfully where He has placed us. Whatever the assignment, the invitation requires trust.
Many believers hesitate because they feel inadequate. Moses doubted his ability to speak. Jeremiah believed he was too young. Peter recognized his own failures. Yet God consistently works through ordinary people who depend on His strength rather than their own.
Saint James teaches us that obedience often begins before understanding. We do not need every answer before taking our next faithful step. As we walk with Christ, He shapes our character, deepens our faith, and prepares us for greater responsibilities.
James eventually became the first apostle to be martyred for his faith (Acts 12:2). His unwavering commitment reminds us that following Jesus may involve sacrifice, but it always leads to eternal reward. His life encourages us to answer God’s call with courage, knowing that Christ never abandons those who faithfully follow Him.
Take time today to prayerfully consider where God may be inviting you to grow. Perhaps He is calling you to serve more faithfully, forgive someone, begin a ministry, share your faith, or spend more time in prayer and Scripture.
Rather than waiting until you feel completely ready, trust God’s promise to equip those He calls. Start with one simple act of obedience today. Small, faithful steps often become the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ.
Ask the Holy Spirit to remove fear, replace hesitation with faith, and help you recognize opportunities to glorify God in your daily life. Like Saint James, choose obedience over comfort and trust that God will lead each step.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling ordinary people into Your extraordinary work. As we remember Saint James the Apostle today, help us respond to Your voice with willing and obedient hearts.
Forgive us for the times we have delayed, doubted, or ignored Your invitations because of fear or uncertainty. Fill us with the courage to trust You even when we cannot see the entire path ahead.
Lord, strengthen our faith to follow wherever You lead. Equip us with wisdom, humility, and perseverance to serve You faithfully in every season of life. Help us become bold witnesses of Your love through our words, actions, and daily choices.
May our lives reflect wholehearted devotion to Christ, bringing glory to Your name and encouragement to those around us. Keep us faithful until the very end, just as Saint James remained faithful to his calling. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Today, prayerfully identify one specific way God has been prompting your heart—whether it is serving in your church, forgiving someone, sharing your faith, beginning a new ministry, or spending more intentional time with Him in prayer.
Instead of postponing it because of fear, uncertainty, or feelings of inadequacy, take one practical step of obedience before the day ends. Trust that God equips those He calls and will faithfully guide you as you follow His leading. Write down your commitment, pray over it, and ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to continue walking in faithful obedience each day.
