God’s desire is not merely that we know about Jesus but that, through the Holy Spirit, we become more like Him each day.
Welcome to today’s devotional for July 23. The Christian life is a journey of continual growth, and God lovingly shapes His children into the likeness of His Son. Becoming More Like Jesus Every Day is not about achieving perfection through our own efforts but allowing God’s grace to transform our hearts, attitudes, and actions.
Every challenge we face becomes an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love, humility, patience, and obedience. As you meditate on today’s Scripture, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal one area where He desires to make you more like Jesus today.
An apprentice once worked under a skilled craftsman. During the first few weeks, every piece he created had noticeable flaws. Instead of criticizing him harshly, the master patiently corrected his mistakes, demonstrated better techniques, and encouraged him to keep practicing.
Months later, people began noticing that the apprentice’s work looked remarkably similar to the master’s. It wasn’t because he became perfect overnight but because he spent time learning, observing, and following his teacher every day.
Our relationship with Jesus works the same way. We all begin with weaknesses, struggles, and imperfections. Yet as we spend time in God’s Word, pray faithfully, obey His commands, and depend on the Holy Spirit, our lives slowly begin to resemble Christ. Spiritual growth is often gradual, but every step of obedience brings us closer to reflecting His character.
Paul reminds believers in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we are “being transformed” into Christ’s image. Notice that transformation is ongoing. God does not expect instant spiritual maturity. Instead, He faithfully works within us day by day.
Jesus demonstrated the perfect character we are called to imitate. He showed compassion to the hurting, forgave those who wronged Him, served with humility, obeyed the Father’s will completely, and loved without conditions. Becoming like Jesus means allowing those same qualities to become evident in our own lives.
This transformation is impossible through human determination alone. The Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out as we surrender ourselves to God. He convicts us when we sin, strengthens us when we are weak, and empowers us to love others as Christ loves us.
Growth also requires intentional choices. We become more like Jesus when we spend regular time reading Scripture, praying sincerely, worshipping faithfully, forgiving freely, and serving others with humility. Every act of obedience strengthens our spiritual character.
Some days the progress may seem small, and we may become discouraged by our shortcomings. Yet God is patient with His children. He measures growth over a lifetime, not by a single day. As we remain close to Christ, His character gradually becomes visible through our words, attitudes, decisions, and relationships.
God’s goal is not merely to improve our behavior but to transform our hearts so that Jesus is reflected in everything we do.
Today, intentionally ask yourself whether your words, attitudes, and actions reflect the character of Jesus. Before responding to difficult situations, pause and pray for wisdom. Choose kindness instead of harshness, patience instead of frustration, and forgiveness instead of resentment.
Spend time reading one Gospel chapter today and observe how Jesus treated people. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you imitate one specific quality you notice. Remember that spiritual growth happens through consistent daily obedience rather than dramatic moments. As you faithfully walk with Christ, He will continue shaping you into His likeness one day at a time.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me enough to transform my life. I confess that I often fall short of reflecting the character of Jesus. Forgive me for the times I have chosen selfishness, impatience, pride, or fear instead of love and obedience.
Holy Spirit, continue Your work within me. Shape my thoughts, words, and actions so they honor Christ. Teach me to love as Jesus loved, forgive as He forgave, serve with humility, and trust You completely in every circumstance.
Help me grow each day spiritually, even when the process feels slow. Strengthen me to obey Your Word and rely on Your grace rather than my own strength. May my life become a testimony that points others to Jesus.
Thank You for never giving up on me and for faithfully completing the work You have begun in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Faith Challenge
Choose one Christlike quality—such as patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness, compassion, or gentleness—and intentionally practice it throughout today. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you demonstrate that quality in every conversation, decision, and response, especially when faced with challenges.
Look for opportunities to encourage someone, offer forgiveness, serve without seeking recognition, or show grace where it may not be expected. At the end of the day, spend a few moments reflecting on how God helped you grow. Thank Him for every opportunity He gave you to reflect Jesus, and pray for the strength to become even more like Christ tomorrow.
